Reframing Blue Monday – Please Welcome “Do Monday”
Every year, the third Monday of January is labelled “Blue Monday,” on 20th Jan this year it is touted as the year’s most depressing day. Media outlets seize the opportunity to paint the day in doom and gloom, citing factors like post-holiday fatigue, financial strain, and dreary weather. But what if we challenged that narrative? What if, instead of feeding into this cycle, we reframed it into something empowering — a “Do Monday,” where we focus on actions that uplift and energise us?
January, often seen as a bleak month, might actually be underrated. It’s a time to slow down, recover from holiday chaos, and enjoy simple pleasures like cosying up with a film, reading, or embracing quieter moments. By choosing to see its potential, we can make this season one of growth, reflection, and intentional living.
Why January Deserves More Credit
Statistics show that January can be challenging for mental health. The holiday period may amplify feelings of loneliness or highlight financial and health challenges. Yet, January also offers unique opportunities for renewal. It’s a month with fewer social pressures, perfect for introspection, relaxation, and laying the groundwork for a better year.
Here’s how to conquer Blue Monday and reimagine it as “Do Monday”. Instead of viewing January as a post-holiday slump, embrace it as a time to:
- Recalibrate your routines. Use the quieter weeks to establish habits that support long-term well-being.
- Indulge in self-care. Read, journal, or enjoy creative outlets without external demands.
- Focus on simplicity. January’s pace allows for decluttering your mind and living spaces.
What is “Do Monday”?
Instead of succumbing to negativity, “Do Monday” is about taking action to care for yourself and others. It’s a day to focus on mental well-being, set achievable goals, and practice kindness.
Here are some ideas to get started:
- Take a walk among the trees. Nature has a calming effect on the mind. Strolling in a park or forest can reduce stress and boost your mood.
- Call a friend. Connection is key. Reach out to someone you care about, even to say hello.
- Write a happiness list. Reflect on what makes you happy or what could bring joy into your life.
- Plan small, achievable goals. Break down your aspirations for the month into bite-sized steps.
- Try something new. Exploring new activities can re-energise you, whether it’s a recipe, a hobby, or a workout.
It’s Time To Own “Do Monday”
By reframing Blue Monday, we take back control of the narrative. Instead of letting it be a symbol of despair, make it a day of empowerment. Choose one or two actions from the “Do Monday” list and commit to them. Whether it’s reaching out to a loved one, taking steps toward a personal goal, or simply enjoying a moment of calm, these actions can set the tone for a more positive year ahead.
